Blender is also cool, for you to develop certain skillset, but maybe Blender is more towards indie, if you want to try as a film-maker or do some motion graphics for the clients, and make some good portfolio, a bit of a pocket money and work experience in the same time. If you want to find a job in the industry, knowing how to use Houdini is a good start. If you go against your own curiosity and take the advice of some internet rando instead, you'll probably lose interest before you really gain any traction.Ī lot of people already said useful advice, but I will try to be more practical. Your curiosity is what will provide the necessary motivation to learn and succeed at your craft. If you're more interested in Blender, then download that instead. If you see the things people do in Houdini and think "I wish I could do that", then download Houdini. The best thing you can do, in my opinion, is to follow what interests you the most. It's hard to judge who is worth listening to. Having said that, I'd be careful about paying too much attention to the advice of people online about these sorts of things. If price is your only concern, it's hard to beat "free". Apprentice has pretty much all the functionality of the full version, save for a few restrictions on rendering and that sort of thing. My advice would be to download Houdini Apprentice and start watching tutorials about the things that interest you. (I posted this same exact question on r/vfx, looking for a variety of answers) I'll have to get a job in a year or so, so in the meantime should i go with for example blender to learn basics or if im dedicated enough is the apprentice verison of sidefx houdini the way to go until I can afford the indie license in the near future?Īppreciate all the answers and feel free to ask me questions My question is, which software should I start learning with? After a bit of research houdini looks good but not affordable atm. At the moment i dont have a job (im 17yo) but i have a pretty good pc already and some experience with photoshop and video editing. I have a lot of time on my hands to learn and study vfx but my only limitation is money. I'm looking to create cool visual effects (explosions, collisions, houses collapsing, smoke, fluid, etc.) And maybe make some money in years to come. I've really become interested in vfx and decided to hopefully start learning some vfx myself asap.
